History
& Overview
The Australian Institute of Travel & Tourism
was established in 1966 by a number of Travel Industry leaders.
It was born out of AFTA and was the initiative of Stewart Moffat
who for many years was its patron. The concept was that, while AFTA
represented the employers in the industry concerned with industrial
issues, AITT would become a forum for individuals, with no hierarchy,
focussing on professional development.
Over the years, AITT has developed into the only cross-sector
industry association, allowing great networking opportunities and
enhancing career prospects.
Today its members are drawn from the full range of
travel, tourism, hospitality, sport and recreation industry firms
and organisations including shipping lines, tour wholesalers, travel
agencies, tourist attractions, national/state/regional tourism organisations,
tour operators, airlines, hotels, restaurants, money exchanges,
leisure media houses, sporting groups, promoters, and education
& training establishments.
The Institute operates at a local/regional Chapter
level. Committee members are all volunteers as are those who make
up both the State/Territory and the Federal Council. As a not-for-profit
organisation, members support activities by subscription and fund
raising events. All monies are returned to the industry in one way
or another.
Current typical activities of AITT include:
- Student mentor scheme, where tourism students are
paired with industry achievers to assist with their introduction
to industry
- Career seminars to enhance understanding of the
industry and career opportunities
- Agency familiarisations, encouraging sales of
diversified tourism products
- Networking meetings
- Professional development opportunities for multi-skilling

Secretariat or your State Councillor.
